… endlich war es also so weit ! Raus aus der Stadt und rein ins Abenteuer !

Am Mittwoch früh sind wir nach dem Frühstück mit unserem Auto losgefahren Richtung Sosúa. Das ist ein Städtchen an der Nordküste. Ursprünglich wollten wir im Westen der Insel anfangen und dann über Jarabacoa (in den Bergen) an die Nordküste fahren, aber wegen der Verzögerung mit dem Auto und weil wir keinen Stress wollten, haben wir das ausgelassen und sind auf direktem Weg nach Norden gefahren.

Auf dem Weg haben wir uns Santiago angesehen – aber nur vom Auto aus 😉 Nach Santo Domingo ist Santiago die zweitgrößte Stadt der Insel und offenkundig auf die Herstellung von Zigarren spezialisiert.

 


 


 
Etwa 20 km vor Sosúa haben wir in Puerto Plata Halt gemacht und haben uns einen Grillhendl-Stand an der Straße gesucht. Das machen wir im Urlaub immer so. Es gibt keine besseren Hendl als die, die über Kohle in einem alten Ölfass gegrillt worden sind :eat: *yummy* ! Das Munchkin kam so auch zum ersten Mal in den Genuss eines frisch gegrillten Hendls und war voll des Glücks ! Da wurde geschmatzt und „schnawwuliert“, wie die Frankfurter sagen 😉 :eat:

 


 
In Sosúa angekommen haben wir unser Appartment gesucht, und auch gefunden !, und dann waren wir schnell beim örtlichen Supermarkt das Nötigste für den Abend und den nächsten Morgen einkaufen. Zum Abschluss des Tages noch einen Spaziergang an den Strand und ein kleiner Sprung in die kühlen Fluten des Atlantiks :bad: Das Leben ist schön ! 😀 Wir wurden mit einem herrlichen Sonnenuntergang belohnt ! Traumhaft schön ! :love:

 


 


 


 


 


 


 
Am nächsten Morgen, Neujahr !, haben wir uns früh auf den Weg gemacht, schließlich wollten wir was sehen ! Leider haben außer uns anscheinend noch alle ihren Rausch ausgeschlafen oder waren noch beim Feiern, so dass es nicht wirklich was zu sehen gab … Also sind wir nach Puerto Plata ins Ocean World gefahren. Dort haben wir fast den ganzen Tag zugebracht und es war wirklich schön. Das Munchkin hatte wahnsinnigen Spaß die Delphine zu beobachten und selbst eine Runde im Salzwasserpool zu drehen und auch für uns war es echt in Ordnung. Nachmittags haben wir noch einen Abstecher zum Fort gemacht, aber das hatte geschlossen.

 


 


 
Eigentlich wollten wir mit dem Cable Car auf den Monte Isabel de Torres fahren, aber der Gipfel war von einer dicken Wolkenschicht eingehüllt, so dass wir beschlossen haben, unser Glück am nächsten Tag zu versuchen. Gesagt getan. In der Früh war das Wetter bombig und so sind wir als erstes zum Cable Car aufgebrochen. Die Fahrt nach oben ist … grenzwertig für mich, weil ich Höhenangst habe. Es ist schön, die Aussicht ist super und ein Spaziergang über den Berg lohnt sich allemal. Man entkommt dem Krach der Motorräder und dem Gestank der Stadt – es ist herrlich ruhig und die Luft ist wunderbar klar. Also ein echter Tipp ! Gegen Mittag sind wir wieder runter gefahren und dann nix wie ab nach Hause in unser Appartment, Mittagessen.

Nachmittags haben wir dann Besuch von Janio und Liza bekommen, die für die nächsten 3 Tage mit uns fahren wollten. Als wir die beiden vom Bus abgeholt haben, haben wir nicht mehr großartig was gemacht – wir waren noch am Strand, dann beim Abendessen in einem deutschen (!!) Restaurant – das „Germany Bar & Grill“ wird von einem Auswanderer, ich denke aus NRW, geführt und bietet „Futtern wie bei Muttern“. Fernab der Heimat das mit Abstand beste Jägerschnitzel der Welt !

Am nächsten Tag sind wir nach Cabarete gefahren. Cabarete ist berühmt für seine Surfstrände. Besonders das Kite-Surfen steht hier hoch im Kurs. Der Liebste, das Munchkin und ich waren in den Höhlen (Cuevas de Cabarete) und wir waren angenehm überrascht ! Das war wirklich toll ! Man konnte sogar in den unterirdischen Cenotes schwimmen (was wir in der Höhle nicht gemacht haben) – für mich als nachtblinder Maulwurf genau das richtige – schwimmen in absoluter Dunkelheit. Na danke. 😛 Aber in der letzten Höhle, in der wir waren, da war eine Cenote mit Tageslicht 🙂 Der Liebste hat sich getraut und ist von einem 3 m hohen Felsvorsprung in das 6 m tiefe, kristallklare Wasser gesprungen. Ich wär für eine Million da nicht runter … 😡 Das Munchkin hat sich auch getraut – wahrscheinlich wär der Zwerg sogar gesprungen, wenn ich es erlaubt hätte … Aber zumindest eine Runde schwimmen in dem Cenote musste schon drin sein.

 


 
Von den Höhlen aus sind wir an den Strand. Leider wurden wir dort direkt nach dem Mittagessen von einem kleineren Unwetter wieder vertrieben und zurück in unser Appartment verscheucht. Dort haben wir den Regen abgewartet und nachmittags noch einen Spaziergang gemacht. Abends haben wir Bekannte von Liza besucht und waren noch auf deren Empfehlung im Restaurant „La Costera“ essen.

 


 


 


 


 
Am nächsten Morgen haben wir unsere Siebensachen zusammengepackt und sind nach Las Terrenas gefahren. Die Fahrt dahin war nicht so schrecklich, wie ich es mir vorgestellt habe. Die Straßen waren meistens gut, die letzten Kilometer sogar sehr gut. Und die Aussicht war atemberaubend ! In Las Terrenas haben wir unser Zimmer bezogen und sind dann den Rest des Tages zum Strand. Das Munchkin hatte wieder viel Spaß. Inzwischen wurde das Kriegsbeil mit dem Sand und dem Meer begraben und ist einer echten Freundschaft gewichen 😀 :love:

 


 


 


 


 
Leider waren wir nur einen Nachmittag und einen Vormittag in Las Terrenas, aber das, was wir gesehen haben, war wirklich schön. Auch das Abschlussessen im Restaurant „La Yuca Caliente“ war ganz hervorragend ! Nach dem Mittagessen haben wir die Rückreise nach Santo Domingo angetreten. Auch das ging schneller als erwartet. In Santo Domingo haben wir das Auto wieder abgegeben und Mona hat uns abgeholt. Abends haben wir noch auf der Terrasse eine Runde Domino gespielt. Der Liebste, das Munchkin und ich sind relativ früh ins Bett – am nächsten Morgen wollten wir mit dem Bus nach Punta Cana fahren …

… we finally did it ! We went out of town – right into our own adventure !

On Wednesday morning we left Santo Domingo for Sosúa. Sosúa is a small town on the North Coast. Originally we planned to start our trip in the west of the island and go up to the North via Jarabacoa (which is located in the mountains), but due to delay with the rental car and because we decided to do a more relaxing holiday, we skipped that and went directly north.

On the way to Sosúa we were going through Santiago which is the second biggest town of the island, right after the capital, Santo Domingo. It is obvious, that Santiago is specialised in the production of cigars.

 


 


 
About 20 km prior to Sosúa we stopped in Puerto Plata; searching for a roadside chicken. We always do this on our trips. You will not find a chicken that tastes better than the ones grilled over coal in an old barrel :eat: *yummy* ! It was the Munchkin’s first ever roadside chicken and the little one so loved it ! What a noisy lunch that was :eat:

 


 
When we finally arrived in Sosúa we were looking for our appartment (and we found it right away !) and then we went to the local supermarket to get some stuff for dinner and breakfast. In the evening we went to the beach and jumped into the cool floods of the Atlantic Ocean :bad: Life’s good ! 😀 We were rewarded with the most beautiful sunset so far ! Absolutely stunning ! :love:

 


 


 


 


 


 


 
The next morning, New Year !, we started early to explore the surroundings ! Unfortunately everybody else seemed to either sleep off their hangover or to still partying hard. So … there wasn’t really much to see. Therefore we ended up at the Ocean World in Puerto Plata. We almost spent the whole day there and it really was worth going. The Munchkin had so much fun watching the dolphins and having a swim in the seawater pool herself.
In the afternoon we stopped by at the fortress but it was closed.

 


 


 
We intended to take the Cable Car to Monte Isabel de Torres, but the peak was covered in clouds and so we decided to give it a try on the next day. In the morning the weather was great and so we went directly to the Cable Car. The journey is … oh well. I’m afraid of heights. What else do I have to say ? It’s nice up there, you have a great view and strolling around the peak is really worth going. You finally escape the noise and the smelliness of the town – it’s absolutely peaceful and quiet up there and the air is totally clear and fresh. We left the mountain around noon going back to our appartment for some lunch.

In the afternoon Janio and Liza were joining us. They decided to take the bus to Sosúa and stay with us the next 3 days. After we picked them up at the bus stop we went to the beach and then we had dinner in a German (!!) restaurant. The „Germany Bar & Grill“ is run by an emigrant, I guess from North Rhine-Westphalia, and offers „Futtern wie bei Muttern“. (There is no real translation for that saying, I think. It means that you eat the same food and the same quality as you are used to when eating at your mom’s) Far from home this definitely was the best Schnitzel in the world !

On the next day we went to Cabarete. Cabarete is famous for its surfing beaches. Especially the kite surfers are numerous. The hubby, the munchkin and I myself went to see the caves (Cuevas de Cabarete) und we were pleasantly surprised ! It really was absolutely worth going ! You were even allowed to go for a swim in the underground cenotes (which we didn’t in the cave) – especially for me being nightblind … swimming in pitchblack darkness ? Thanks, but no thanks. 😛 But the last cave we went in had an opening and there was daylight so you could see the cenote and the cristal clear water. 🙂 The hubby had the heart to jump from a rock spur (about 3 m high) into the 6 m deep cenote. I wouldn’t have – not even if one had given me a million dollars … 😡 The munchkin is not so chicken-hearted, though. I guess if I would have let her – should would have jumped … But she went for a swim in the Cenote.

 


 
After the caves we went to the beach. Unfortunately there was a thunderstorm coming so we had to leave right after lunch. In our apartement we waited for the storm to pass. In the afternoon we went for a walk through Sosúa and later we met some friends of Liza. It was to their recommendation we went for dinner to the „La Costera“.

 


 


 


 


 
The very next day we packed all our stuff together and left Sosúa for Las Terrenas. The trip wasn’t too bad at all. The road was good most of the time, the last couple of kilometres it was really perfect. And the view was absolutely stunning ! On our arrival in Las Terrenas we checked in and went to the beach for the rest of the day. The munchkin had tons of fun. The hatchet was finally buried and the sand, the sea and the little one became friends. 😀 :love:

 


 


 


 


 
Unfortunately it was only one afternoon and one morning we stayed in Las Terrenas, but the few things we saw were really beautiful. Also the Luncheon in the „La Yuca Caliente“ before we left for Santo Domingo again was very good ! The trip back to SD didn’t take as long as I expected. In SD we returned our car and Mona picked us up. In the evening we had a game of Dominoes on the terrace and soon the hubby, the munchkin an I went to bed. We wanted to leave to Punta Cana the next morning …
